Dolomites

“THE FINEST WORK OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE WORLD” 

This 10-day trip takes us through the extraordinary mountain range in the northern Italian Alps known as the Dolomites, which are widely regarded as being among the most attractive mountain landscapes in the world. Their intrinsic beauty derives from a variety of spectacular vertical forms such as pinnacles, spires and towers, with contrasting horizontal surfaces including ledges, crags and plateaux, all of which rise abruptly above extensive scree deposits and more gentle foothills. A great diversity of colours is provided by the contrasts between the bare pale-coloured rock surfaces and the forests and flower-filled meadows below. Another notable contrast is that between the striking natural beauty and the haunting vestiges left behind from World War One, when the area suffered the extremely unfortunate destiny of finding itself on the front line between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Italian state. 

This trip has been designed to include some of the area’s most spectacular scenery, whilst following a continuous route (walking from hotel to hotel, but without changing hotels every night) that follows well-established paths and tracks through forests and valleys and across mountain meadows and high plateaus, providing close proximity to some of the area’s high mountain peaks and most majestic landscapes. The walks are of a great variety and strung together to form a loop that begins in the Ladin speaking town of San Cassiano, located in the Alto Adige (Südtirol). From here the route continues north to the predominantly German speaking part of the Alto Adige, before heading south and ending in the Italian Veneto, at the world-renown Cortina d’Ampezzo. We stay in 6 different and very comfortable mountain-style hotels over the course of the trip and enjoy delicious regional specialities and excellent wines throughout.
